Introducing the adidas Ultra 4D: Combining Two Proven Winners

Adidas Ultra 4D Black and White

Built on the strengths of two of adidas's most innovative running sneakers, the Ultra 4D combines the iconic Primeknit upper from Ultraboost with a refined 4D outsole initially found on the Futurecraft 4D. This revolutionary 4D process, known as Continuous Liquid Interface Production, increases the visual 3D effect.

Popular adidas Ultra 4D Collaborations

In November 2020, adidas teamed up with New Jersey-based retailer Packer Shoes on an Ultra 4D (FY4363). The sneaker uses a blue and teal colorway and features suede accents on the toe cap. With elevated materials, With elevated materials, the shoe retailed for $250. Its resale value is around $300 on eBay.

In December 2020, adidas collaborated with Sneakersnstuff on a light green and black colorway nicknamed "Green Tea Time" inspired by Matcha tea (FY5631). The upper features leather cages in place of the standard plastic and also retailed for $250. Depending on the size, pairs can be spotted on eBay selling for more than $400.

That same month, Social Status designed the "Renaissance" Ultra 4D (FY4366). It features colors inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's famed Mona Lisa and includes suede cages. The Renaissance retailed for $250 and was limited to 3,020 pairs. It resales for just over $300 on eBay.

Another notable adidas collaboration was with Parley. While all Ultra 4Ds (and most of adidas's modern Primeknit shoes) are made from recycled materials supplied by Parley, this two-sneaker collection is unique. The shoes feature cageless designs and incorporate recovered ocean waste similar to the original adidas x Parley Ultraboost prototype.

Other Elements That Boost the Ultra 4D's Design

As the name suggests, the adidas Ultra 4D shares many aspects of the Ultraboost. You'll find all the elements of the Ultraboost upper, including Primeknit, heel cups and lace cages. The only notable difference is the branding on the heel cups and insoles. Rather than reading "Ultraboost," it says "Ultra 4D."

The adidas Ultra 4D is also fitted with a Continental rubber outsole, although the tread pattern differs from the design on the Ultraboost.

Collectibility and Resale Value of the adidas Ultra 4D

Although the Ultra 4D has yet to reach the same level of popularity and success as the Ultraboost, the silhouette has a steadily growing buzz around it. It quickly became a relatively affordable and easily obtainable alternative to the super-limited and expensive Futurecraft 4D. Diehard Ultraboost fans and runners seeking the latest technology also gravitated toward the Ultra 4D to see how it stacked up against the Ultraboost. The $220 price tag was a deterrent for more casual consumers wanting a pair.

Except for a few popular collaborations, each Ultra 4D release has been fairly easy to acquire. Some pairs can be found for less than the suggested retail price on the resale market. Overall, they're collectible to a niche group of consumers but haven't had the same impact as the Ultraboost — as proven by the resale value.

Comparing the Comfort of Ultra 4D vs. Ultraboost

Since the Ultra 4D is more expensive and newer than the Ultraboost, one might assume that means it's automatically more comfortable. However, comfort can be subjective — like a mattress, some prefer firmer while others prefer more cushioning. Compared to the Ultraboost, the Ultra 4D has a firmer, less cushiony feel. Average comfort-seekers will probably find the Ultraboost to be more comfortable for casual wear. But if you've ever felt your Ultraboosts were too soft, the 4D is an excellent alternative, especially if you're a runner who likes a slightly firmer midsole.

What Is adidas 4D Technology?

This innovative technology is a 3D-printed cushioning system that's responsive, durable and ultra-lightweight compared to traditionally solid midsoles.

The idea to use 3D printing wasn't an overnight phenomenon for adidas. The brand began experimenting with 3D printing in the early 2000s, but it became more feasible for use in the 2010s as technologies improved, processes were simplified, and costs got reduced.

In 2015, adidas released its first sneaker using 3D printed midsoles, the Futurecraft 3D. The shoe, limited to only 300 pairs, was essentially a prototype in the development process. While the sneaker was groundbreaking in 3D footwear technology, the release proved that 3D printing was still too expensive and time-consuming to justify incorporating it into the adidas product lineup.

In 2017, adidas partnered with Carbon, a California-based 3D printing company, to improve the technology. Using Carbon's proprietary Digital Light Synthesis, the two brands developed an updated 3D printing process using a projection of UV light and oxygen to turn liquid resin into printed materials. And adidas 4D technology was born.

The brand used the 4D name to better convey the futuristic, next-level approach to 3D printing technology. Also, adidas used extensive amounts of athlete data in its development process, which also represented the fourth dimension.

How Does the adidas Ultra 4D Fit?

The Ultra 4D fits similar to the Ultraboost because it uses the same Primeknit upper. Its sock-like bootie construction is designed to fit snugly and securely while running. Runners are recommended to get their true size. They may feel a bit tight at first but form to the feet after a short break-in period. If you have a wide foot or simply want a more casual fit without any break-time, it's recommended to go a half size up. Either way, the adidas Ultra 4D will stay comfortably in place.

The adidas Ultra 4D Revisits a Classic Colorway at a New Price

The adidas Ultra 4D was initially released in August 2020 in a black and purple "OG" colorway (FW7089) that paid homage to the first Ultraboost. To complete the nostalgic theme, it also featured the signature arrow-shaped Primeknit pattern specific to the Ultraboost 1.0.

While the design was a clear nod to the modern classic, the silhouette was equally futuristic with an all-black 4D midsole. Along with the innovative materials came a new price tag. Retailing at $220, the Ultra 4D came in at $40 more than the Ultraboost.
