Ford Mustang Window Motors and Parts

A critical component of the Mustang is its power window motors. Though the first Ford Mustangs windows did not use window motors and were manual in early models, over the years the Mustang began to offer power windows. Some segments of the Mustangs power window motor system may need replacement after years of usage.

What kind of window motors does the Ford Mustang use?

The standard power window regulator, also known as a power window motor, used in the Ford Mustang is a cable system. This Mustang system uses two cables attached to a set of levers to push and pull on the bracket. When the window motor receives current, different forces are applied to the two cables. This then directs the system to move the bracket up or down, which raises and lowers the Mustangs window.

What parts are needed for a Ford Mustang window motor?

Understanding which Mustang parts to purchase when replacing a power window motor requires knowledge of the functions of each segment of the system. Once you know what each part does, diagnosing the problems associated with those power window motor parts, and ordering the right one for your Mustang should be much easier.

  • Window motor: The actual motor is the powerhouse behind the entire system within the vehicle. This motor takes in electrical current and converts it to power. The power is used to raise or lower the bracket that supports the glass window using either cables or gears. In the case of the Ford Mustang, the system drives cables.
  • Electrical connector: In order for the Mustangs motor to work it needs electrical current. The electrical connector delivers this current to the motor. Most window regulator problems are caused by a loose or dirty electrical connection, so make sure you check for that first when looking at the vehicles regulators.
  • Cables: These two cables move the levers attached to the bracket. If they break or become loose, the window motor will not raise or lower the system, and the levers will not budge.
  • Levers: In the Mustang, the levers convert the relatively small amount of power in the cables into a force enough to move the window bracket. These are generally made out of tough metal and will only break if rusted through completely.
  • Interior button: The power window motor will only receive electrical current if the button on the Mustang’s interior is pressed by the driver (or passengers, depending on the location of the switch). This Mustang button tells the vehicles motor system to start passing current through. This lets the motor turn on and it then works for the appropriate period of time. While buttons will not generally break, you may experience wiring difficulties that lead to a lack of communication between the interior button and the motor.
