Restore Classic Sound to Your Technics Record Player

The turntable belt transfers the rotation required to play vinyl records on your high-fidelity Technics turntable model. If your record player powers up but won’t spin, a worn or damaged belt is the most likely culprit. While it rarely breaks completely, the Technics belt does stretch and slip off the drive eventually, requiring replacement and giving you the opportunity to clean up under the platter and replace the cartridge.

How do you know if you need a replacement?

The most glaring indicator that there’s a problem with your Technics turntable model is when you turn it on, and it doesn’t spin. Another indicator is that audio sounds low-pitched or “bassy.” Varying speed during audio playback also signifies damage or wear. Some audiophiles check the timing regularly by using a strobe disc to check the speed of the platter during playback.

How do you find the correct replacement belt?

Turntables are designed for record playback using a specific belt. See the manufacturer’s website to identify the exact model replacement belt for your Technics turntable. You can also measure the length and width of the turntable belt, subtracting 5mm to 10mm in length to compensate for stretching. Alternatively, you can find the proper dimensions for your replacement by measuring the circumference of the drive hub and subtracting 5mm to 10mm in length.

How do you install the new turntable belt?
  • Disconnection: Start by disconnecting the power before removing the mat.
  • Removal: Lift the platter off the base. If it will not lift, softly tap the center shaft with a hammer, remove the platter, and place it upside down on a flat surface.
  • Installation: Make sure that the belt is straight and centered around the platter or turntable hub. If the platter doesn’t have access ports, stretch it around the platter hub and over the small shaft near the edge of the base, and then replace the platter, rotating it in both directions twice to make sure that it’s seated correctly. If your Technics turntable has access holes, flip the platter over, and place it on the center spindle after placing the new belt around the hub. Align the access port to the motor spindle, and stretch the belt over the shaft, making sure that it’s below the notch that keeps it on the motor spindle.
How do you know if the belt is working right?

Test the turntable belt by gently spinning the platter in both directions. It should turn smoothly with mild resistance. You should feel no jerking or sudden braking. If the motion is not smooth, check the belt for twists or kinks, and repeat the installation steps.

What if the installation and belt don’t work?

The most common installation issue is that the belt is not on straight. Also, make sure that it’s wrapped below the small retaining cap on the motor. If you cannot comfortably spin the platter by hand, the belt is too tight. If it’s installed correctly and the platter doesn’t spin when you power on the player, the belt is too loose.
