Pontiac Grand Prix Motor Mounts

Not only do all those bumps and potholes you encounter in your everyday drives to work, the grocery store, school, etc. wear down your shocks, struts, and frame of your Pontiac Grand Prix over time, but they also do so to your motor mounts. The motor mounts on your Grand Prix are also under assault from the very engine they seek to hold in place. Knowledge of motor mounts will make it easier to select replacements when the time comes to do so.

How are the motor mounts in your Grand Prix constructed?

There are a number of different custom model motor mounts out there that fit your Pontiac Grand Prix coupe. They range from offering a quieter ride to getting more performance out of your Pontiac engine. Yet, with all the options available, they are all built basically in the same way. The motor mount attaches to the engine with a bushing that bolts into a bracket thats attached to the frame.

  • The more widely used motor mounts on the market (and the ones that come standard on your Pontiac Grand Prix) have a rubber sleeve that acts as a buffer between the engine and frame, absorbing excess noise and vibration. The rubber does have a little give to it, meaning the engine will move around a little and reducing the amount of power delivered to the drive train.
  • If you are looking for something a bit more high performance for your Grand Prix, then you could purchase polyurethane motor mounts. Polyurethane is a more durable and less flexible material than rubber so the engine in your Grand Prix cant move around as much. The tradeoff is that there will be more noise and vibration in your coupe.
  • For a high-performance option, there are solid engine mounts that are metal-on-metal. Since there is only steel instead of bushings, the motor will be secured in place, giving a higher performance with little motor movement. This option is usually used for racing purposes.
What is the difference between OEM and aftermarket motor mounts?

An important decision you will need to make when purchasing motor mounts for your Grand Prix is whether to purchase from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or get your parts aftermarket. OEM parts come from Pontiac and are made to fit your Grand Prix, while aftermarket mounts are made by third-party companies and are more general in their design.

How do you change out your motor mounts?
  • First: Make sure nothing will snag when you lift up the motor on your Grand Prix including all hoses, wires, and lines.
  • Second: Raise a jack up under the motor of your Pontiac Grand Prix using blocks of wood to stabilize it.
  • Third: Remove all mounting hardware on top and underneath your Pontiac.
  • Fourth: Raise the motor of your Grand Prix until you can safely remove the mounts and brackets.
  • Fifth: Install your new mounts and brackets, tighten them down, and lower the motor of your Pontiac Grand Prix into place.
