Jeep Commander Seat Belts and Parts

Jeep Commander safety systems work to secure you, and few parts of this system bear more responsibility than the seat belt and its supporting hardware. Composed of many parts, seat restraints include innovations designed to increase comfort and reliability for passengers big and small. These include poly-webbing, inflatable harnesses, and much more.

What are the main parts of seat belt systems?

Each car designer includes proprietary features in their seat belt safety systems, but most systems include many of the same features.

  • Retractors: These devices exist to allow you freedom of movement while you wear your seat belt. They include special locking mechanisms that swing into action during hard braking or quick stops.
  • Pretensioners: Closely related to retractors, pretensioners work by quickly tightening belts in the event of a crash or a sudden acceleration. This action keeps drivers in their seats and helps them maintain control in emergency situations.
  • Latch plate: The metal piece on the belt that securely fastens to the latch.
  • Latch: The well-secured part that holds the latch, belt, and you in place.
  • Vertical adjusters: These allow drivers to slide the top of the belt up or down to compensate for height differences.
How do inflatable seat belts operate on your Jeep vehicle?

Inflatable seat belts are a mating of regular belt fabrics and modified airbags. During collisions or other emergencies, the inflatable seat belt restrains drivers and passengers much like regular belts, but it also disperses crash forces over a wider area of the body. This results in less pressure, trauma, and ultimately, fewer injuries.

How can you identify issues with your Commander belts?

Many seat belt issues relate to three main parts.

  • Webbing: Each part of the Jeep Commander safety system needs to stay anchored in place during crashes, and this includes the webbing.
  • Locks: Like the webbing, the locking mechanism itself must stay grounded to keep you and your passengers safe. You should take note of – and immediately address – lock slippage or misalignment issues.
  • Retractors: If your belt lacks either sufficient tension or sufficient play, your retractor may be to blame. Properly tensioned belts keep you from sliding under the belts, so keeping retractors tuned works to your benefit.
Are extenders beneficial as Jeep Commander parts?

They certainly are. Jeep Commander seat belts and the seats they secure tend to come in standard sizes. These sizes fit most drivers, but not all of them. Seat belt extenders attach to existing latches or other fittings and extend the range of the belt, allowing larger drivers to enjoy properly fitting, secure restraints while inside the Jeep vehicle.
