Scooter Electrical Switches and Relays

Electrical switches and relays, such as solid state relays, are important devices in industrial and automotive fields. Switches for scooters come in a variety of types and shapes with each one serving a different function. All of these parts use a small amount of voltage to provide the necessary power to the circuit and perform their intended operation.

What types of electrical switches are there?

If you find yourself in need of a new switch for your scooter or other automotive components, it is helpful to know some of the most common varieties available and what they do. Understanding this will allow you to choose the correct set to suit your needs.

  • An ignition switch is part of the control system of any scooter with an engine. It activates the electrical systems and circuits for your scooter.
  • A brake and clutch switch operates the internal systems of the vehicle responsible for slowing, stopping, or changing its gears.
  • If you need a way to stop the fuel pump from running in your scooter, you may wish to install a kill switch instead.

Modulars come in a variety of styles including those listed above. A modular system keeps all the parts and circuits separate from one another, meaning you only need to replace or repair individual sections as necessary.

What types of scooter relays are available?

Relays are the second part of the equation and exist in almost all vehicles, including some scooters. A relay allows a circuit with a lower voltage to turn off or on a circuit with higher voltage by opening or closing that circuit. This is useful when you need to perform certain functions such as turning on your scooters lights. Understanding the kinds of relays available will help you choose the one that works for you.

  • A starter relay sends a large current to the starter motor and controls the engine startup process.
  • Turn signal relays send electrical currents to the bulbs that govern your turn signal, thus switching it to flash off and on intermittently.

Note that in addition to obtaining individual parts for each circuit, you can also find switches or relays that are already integrated into a handle that fits your scooter model.

How do you install a switch?

Once youve obtained all the necessary components you need for your scooter, its time to begin the installation process. Although the specific steps for installing devices in a particular make or model of scooter may vary slightly, you can still use these basic guidelines to help you through the task of connecting the various circuits.

  • Depending on the design of your scooter, youll remove the headset via a top cover or inside the headlight frame.
  • Disconnect any electrical wiring, and make a note of which colors go to which connectors.
  • Unscrew the retaining cap on the part you need to replace, and remove the old one.
  • Insert the new one, and screw a new retaining cap onto it.
  • Replace any coverings or panels securely.
