When Rolex first released the original GMT-Master watch in 1954, the brand was all about functionality and practicality. This line originally catered to pilots and world travelers. Even after the next-generation Rolex GMT Master II took over, most of the timepieces that Rolex created were stainless steel.

Over time, Rolex became synonymous with luxury. The watchmaker began using precious metals and premium jewels. The Ref 116748SN Rolex gold watch is a model that marries luxury with the same robust capabilities as the GMT-Master II watches that came before it.

Ref 116748SN Design

A black dial as well as diamonds and black gems are what set the Ref 116748 apart from any other watch in the GMT-Master II lineup. Rolex carefully cut and set these gems in the bezel, replacing the old aluminum and newer Cerachrom inserts.

The arrangement of these jewels is unique. In place of the traditional hash marks to make the 24-hour scale, Rolex used black sapphires. Three diamonds separate each black sapphire.

The Ref 116748SN's Gold Case

In addition to the sapphires and diamonds, Rolex crafted this watch with 18-karat yellow gold forged at its foundry. The material makes up the entire 40-millimeter case. This particular model uses Rolex's Maxi case design. It maintains a 40-millimeter diameter, but the profile is noticeably thicker. The Maxi case has thicker lugs, a wider bezel, and fatter crown guards.

Ref 116748SN comes with an all-gold Oyster bracelet. Similar-looking models have a specialty Oyster bracelet with additional jewels. However, this one uses a plain yellow-gold design.

A Classic Dial

Despite the bezel's glamour, Rolex chose to keep the dial relatively simple. It has the signature black dial. Like other Rolex GMT Master II watches built during this period, the watch has a Maxi dial. The round, rectangular, and triangular pearl white indexes are slightly larger than past designs, improving visibility.

The hour marker indexes are luminous. The same goes for the hands. All the luminous material has a yellow-gold outline for added definition and aesthetic appeal.

The Caliber 3185 Movement

Inside this Rolex gold watch is the Caliber 3185 movement. Many collectors consider this movement one of Rolex's finest. It has a nonmetallic balance unaffected by temperature changes. As a result, it offers more precise timekeeping and better reliability over time.
