This eye-catching Rolex stainless-steel and gold watch was a celebratory model released in 2006. It's part of the long-lasting GMT-Master line that started back in 1954. The placement of the Ref 116713LN in this collection's history is unique. It came a year after an all-gold variant of the Rolex GMT-Master II that the Swiss watchmaker built to celebrate the collection's 50th anniversary. However, Rolex released it a year before what many consider the standard of the 1167XX series.

One of this watch's unique features is the two-tone design. Most standard references in this collection are all stainless steel. Rolex has released some all-gold variants and two-tone designs. But the Ref 116713LN is the first Rolesor to adopt the new design language of the modern GMT-Master II line.

Unique Finish of the Ref 116713LN

"Rolesor" is Rolex's name for their half-gold, half-steel models. The 40-millimeter case is all stainless steel, but the watchmaker incorporates yellow gold throughout the design. It's in the bezel, used to construct the crown, and it appears as accents on the dial. Rolex doesn't get its gold from a third-party supplier. They forge all their gold components at their in-house foundry.

The 18-karat yellow gold appears most in the Oyster bracelet. Instead of the traditional all-steel three-link bracelet, Rolex replaces the center link with yellow gold to create a striped appearance.

The Maxi Dial and Bezel

Another distinct design detail is the new Maxi dial. The case of the Ref 116713LN is slightly larger, so Rolex revamped the dial to match the watch's refined profile. The result is better visibility and larger design elements.

The background of the dial is dark black. Accenting that backdrop are vibrant lumes outlined in yellow gold. The same design language applies to the hands. The 24-hour GMT hand, however, has a deep blue-green hue. Like other Rolex GMT-Master II watches, the Ref 116713LN has a date window. This watch uses a flat sapphire crystal with a small Cyclops lens over the date.

In addition to a larger dial, you'll notice that the bezel is thicker. It's the same bidirectional bezel you can use to monitor a third time zone. However, Rolex replaced the old aluminum insert with a new Cerachrom insert in black. The material is scratch- and fade-resistant, making this model one of the most durable in the collection.

Of course, the most impressive aspect of this Rolex watch is what you can't see. Hidden inside the case is a new Caliber 3186 movement. It's an automatic movement that offers 50 hours of power reserve. Caliber 3186 became one of Rolex's staple movements, and the Ref 116713LN was among the first references to get it.
