The Rolex Submariner Bluesy: A Two-Toned Classic

Rolex Submariner Bluesy

Rolex is a Swiss watchmaker with a long history of innovation and experimentation. While many of the brand's biggest achievements come from its construction and precision, several unique designs still captivate collectors. One of these is the Bluesy Rolex.

This watch debuted in the 1980s and had several variations over the following decades. It gets its name from its signature blue dial, blue bezel, and two-toned construction.

The History of the Rolex Bluesy

Before the Bluesy, there was the standard Submariner. The Submariner dive watch is one of many models that put Rolex on the map. The first model hit the scene in 1953, boasting water resistance to a depth of 100 meters.

The Submariner saw several upgrades to introduce new features like larger cases, stronger crystals, and the Triplock crown system for water resistance up to 300 meters.

The Bluesy Rolex is one of many colorways made available during the 1980s, and it was the first Submariner to use the now-iconic Rolesor design.

Ref. 16803: The First Bluesy Rolex

Ref. 16803 debuted in 1984. It was a transitional model, but it had a major impact. As the first Rolesor for the Submariner line, this watch became an instant classic. Rolesor watches combine two metals on the case and bracelet. In the case of Ref. 16803, those metals are stainless steel and 18-karat yellow gold.

The bezels on this watch sport a blue aluminum metal insert. Meanwhile, the bezel ring is yellow gold. Like others in the 1680x family, this Rolex Bluesy Submariner has a sapphire crystal, water resistance up to 300 meters, and the Caliber 3035 movement. The new movement brought the Quickset date function to the Submariner line for the first time.

The dial is blue and has a metallic sunburst finish. Earlier models feature older nipple dials. However, watches produced later in the lifecycle have the now-standard lume-filled indices.

Ref. 16613: The Longest-Produced Rolex Bluesy Submariner

The first Rolex Bluesy Submariner was only in production for a few years. In 1988, Rolex introduced Ref. 16613.

This Bluesy looks nearly identical to its predecessor. But inside, it has a newer Caliber 3135 movement. It has 31 jewels compared to the previous model's 27. Additionally, it has a larger balance wheel. Rolex later introduced its Parachrom hairspring for more precision.

This watch was in production until 2009. In that 20-year run, Rolex also introduced Luminova lume materials and stopped using lug holes.

In 2009, Rolex released the third-generation Bluesy. It's sporting the newer Super Case with thicker lugs, beefier crown guards, and an overall larger profile. It maintains the 40mm case diameter, but those added details give it more presence on the wrist.

Ref. 116613 also introduced the new Cerachrom bezel insert. This proprietary ceramic alloy is now standard. It also boasts the then-new Glidelock clasp that offers easier size adjustments.

Subtle variations in design features occurred throughout this watch's production cycle. For example, earlier models had a flat dial, however, Rolex brought back the sunburst finish in 2013.

This reference is the newest. It went into production in 2020, and the more recent 2021 Rolex Submariner Bluesy watches feature the model's many design changes.

Ref. 126613 introduced a larger 41mm case diameter. It marked the first size upgrade since the Submariner debuted in 1953. It's slightly wider, but Rolex adjusted the case to make it thinner than previous Submariners. It also has a wider bracelet with a solid center and end links.

Inside, the newest Rolex Submariner Bluesy has the Caliber 3235 movement. It offers 70 hours of power reserve, more accuracy, and the Chronergy escapement.
