Ring Light Macro Flash for Olympus Cameras

Your Olympus camera most likely already has a flash, but the lighting from that is not sufficient for some video projects, and cameras with higher megapixels can require more light. Macro ring-light flashes provide additional lighting for your photography.

What is a ring flash?

A ring flash is a lighting source that is used in photography. It is made up of a circular flash tube composed of small bulbs that surround a hollow and large circle. The hole in the middle is there to accommodate the camera's lens. The ring light is used by photographers for additional illumination when taking portraits; it brightens up the eyes of the subject. The ring flash can also be used for filling in shadows when taking macro pictures.

What kind of bulbs are used on ring flashes?

The ring lights have different sources of lighting, but in general, they use a clear, white color as the base light source. Most of these flashes use an LED or xenon light:

  • Xenon light: The light produced from xenon bulbs is intense.
  • LED light: LED lights are energy saving and universal in their lighting use.
How do you use a ring flash?

An adapter will usually be attached to the camera lens before the ring flash to make the installation of it easier. The ring flash has a controller that can be mounted on the hot shoe of the Olympus camera. To mount the ring flash, press the release button on the camera, and install the flash unit over the adapter.

You can also use the macro flash separately from the camera. Because of the light the flash generates, you can keep your camera's ISO down and shoot at a longer focal length. The macro flash also has additional color adapters that can be attached to the white light source to achieve different color hues, such as a cooler or warmer tone. All you have to do is place the adapter over the ring light.

What are some different features of macro lights?

The features that can be present in these products are:

  • Electronic Through the Lens metering (E-TTL): Equivalent to the automatic exposure mode on the camera. The device finds what the exposure is supposed to be automatically.
  • Flash-exposure compensation
  • LCD display
  • Through the Lens (TTL): Integrates the flash into the manual exposure system
  • Bounce: A softly lit flash
