A radiator is a vital component of a Jeep Liberty’s cooling system. It plays an important role in the prevention of engine overheating. To select the right radiator parts, you need to understand how a radiator works and the function of each part.
How does a radiator work?As soon as you turn the ignition, your Jeep Liberty’s thermostat starts tracking the engine’s temperature. When the thermostat registers a high enough temperature, it prompts the engine to release coolant. The coolant is released into your Jeep Liberty’s radiator, where it will cool the engine.
Jeep Liberty radiators are attached to the front fender. They store the coolant released from the engine and decrease its temperature before funneling it back into the engine.
In addition, the radiator’s surface area provides enough space to allow the coolant to decrease in temperature. This cooling effect is amplified by fans and outside air brought in through your Jeep’s vents and front grille. Once the coolant reaches a safe temperature, it’s sent back into the engine. This is a constant process that continues the entire time the engine is running.
What are the different radiator parts?Your Jeep Liberty’s radiator has a simple design that has evolved over time to work better and more efficiently. Jeep Liberty parts work together to make sure the coolant flows in the right direction, cools effectively, and returns to the engine at the right temperature.
- Tanks: Liberty’s radiators have two tanks with protective liners that hold coolant. Coolant is fed into the inlet tank before being transferred through tubes to another tank at the opposite end of the radiator. In automatic transmission vehicles as well as in many SUVs and large trucks, the radiator will have a separate tank to hold transmission fluid.
- Tubes: Tubes connect the Liberty’s two radiator tanks. Much of the coolant’s heat is transferred into the tubes as it travels between the two tanks.
- Cooling fins: Several cooling fins are hitched between the rows of tubes. The Liberty’s tubes pass the heat they absorbed from the coolant into the cooling fins.
- Cooling fans: Cooling fans that are powered by electric motors or a belt help decrease the coolant’s temperature more efficiently. The fans are assisted by airflow from outside the car.
- Radiator cap: The radiator cap is also called a pressure cap because it contains a pressure release valve and spring that direct coolant overflow from the radiator into an overflow tank. Its purpose is to maintain the correct pressure in the coolant system. The only time you remove the Jeep’s radiator cap is when you replace it.
- Radiator deflectors: Deflectors direct cool air into the radiator to help it cool faster. They’re located behind the front bumper and between the front wheels. These parts aren’t found on all vehicles, and some people consider them accessories, but they can improve the efficiency of your Jeep Liberty’s radiator.
