The ignition switch turns your Yamaha on and off. It is also called a starter switch. The starter switch activates the main electrical systems in your motorcycle. It sends electrical current to the engines spark plugs, allowing your V-Star 650 to start.

Your Yamahas ignition switch can wear out over time because it is one of the more frequently used parts on your V-Star. Because the ignition switch is such a vital part of starting your bike, you want to recognize any warning signs before you are stranded on the road with a V-Star that wont start. Here are some clues that you may need to replace your ignition switch:

• If your bike stalls while powered on, your ignition switch may be cutting off power to your ignition and fuel.
• If your V-Star starts briefly then stalls out, this means your ignition is engaged only while cranking the key but not otherwise.
• If you turn the key to the first click and the neutral light does not come on, you know it is the ignition switch preventing the start-up of your Yamaha.

To find the ignition switch on your Yamaha V-Star 650, you will need a 5 mm Allen wrench and a Phillips screwdriver. The ignition switch is behind the battery, so you will need to remove the battery to get to the switch.

• Use the Allen wrench to unscrew the cover to the battery, located on the right side under the seat.
• Remove the restraining band that holds the battery and unplug the two wiring harnesses.
• Unscrew the positive and negative leads and remove the plastic harness case by pulling it off.
• Pull the battery out. Behind the battery you will find a panel.
• Remove the panel behind the battery to find the ignition control unit that contains the ignition switch.

The kill switch, or engine cut-off switch, simply turns off the engine in your Yamaha V-Star 650, but is not a full-power shut-off. The ignition switch sends electrical current to the kill switch on its way to the fuel pump and engine control relays.
