Motorcycle Ignition Coils for Suzuki Boulevard

Suzuki rebranded its Intruder sequence of cruiser motorcycles as the Boulevard series in 2004. In addition to still being marketed as the Intruder by European distributors, the Boulevard comes in several versions: C109R, C90, C50, M109R, M50, S40, S50, and S83. If you have one of these bikes, you may need replacement coil parts and kits for the Boulevard ignition coil and supporting accessories.

What does an ignition coil do?

Your bike engine requires electricity in order to ignite the gasoline fuel in the cylinders. As the voltage of the battery on your motorcycle is not sufficient to cause the spark plugs to spark, the voltage that flows through the wires of the ignition system must be boosted. An electronic component called an ignition coil is placed in the circuit between the battery and the engine, and it transforms low voltage into pulsations of thousands of volts that cause the spark plugs to ignite the fuel and that push the pistons of the engine. With a functioning ignition coil, your motorcycle engine will start and run smoothly.

What are signs that an ignition coil needs replacement?

Your Boulevard should achieve ignition easily and should run smoothly and quietly. If your vehicle is not doing so, the ignition coil may be the source of the problem as the ignition coil may not be providing sufficient power to the spark plugs. Low power or stalling can also be due to a damaged ignition coil. Often, the source of damage in a coil is a short circuit caused by deterioration of the insulation on the wires of the coil. If the coil is at fault, replacing the coil will solve these problems.

The electrical system inside your Boulevard consists of many components that can cause similar problems of not being able to achieve engine ignition or having poor performance. If swapping batteries doesnt solve the problem, then the wiring, regulator, spark plugs, or coil could be at fault. To isolate which component is at fault, it is necessary to troubleshoot to identify the problem. By using a multimeter, you can check continuity. The coil and other components should measure their proper resistance in ohms. A disconnect or break in the wiring will measure infinite ohms while a short circuit will register low or zero ohms. To ensure you get the right part for your motorcycle, remember that physical fit is not enough to ensure compatibility with electrical parts and always check make, model, and year for the right match.
