ATV, Side-by-Side & UTV Fuel Valves & Petcocks

A consistent and properly regulated flow of gas is vital to the operation of any gas-powered vehicle. Fuel valves control and maintain the flow of gasoline to the vehicle’s engine, ensuring your vehicle runs smoothly. A petcock is a specific type of fuel part used in many smaller vehicles such as motorcycles and ATVs.

What is a fuel valve used for?

A fuel valve controls the source and flow of a vehicles fuel. Sometimes this means routing the engine’s fuel supply from one source to another. Often, it switches between two lines connected to the same reservoir. Many fuel valves in ATVs and other smaller vehicles are known as fuel petcock valves.

What is a petcock used for?

Many ATVs have what is known as a three-position fuel petcock valve. This is typically mounted near the vehicle’s gas reservoir, and it controls the supply of gasoline that is supplied to the motor. The parts three positions are On, Off, and Reserve.

How does a reserve fuel tank work?

A reserve fuel tank in an ATV is a bit of a misnomer, as this backup gas is typically drawn from the same source as the main gas. This gas is often stored in the bottom portion of the gas reservoir, and it can be used when the vehicle’s primary gas source is depleted. Using a petcock part, the vehicle operator can manually switch from the primary gas source to the back-up if necessary. The petcock will switch the gas source from the larger main line to a smaller line, allowing the driver time to get more fuel.

When would you need a new fuel petcock?

If your ATV’s engine is not getting gas and the petcock is in the ‘On’ position, the valve may need to be replaced. Likewise, if gas is running into the vehicle’s vacuum lines when the motor isnt on, the petcock might be leaking, and may need to be replaced.

How do you replace a petcock valve in an ATV?

Replacing a worn petcock is a relatively simple process, and requires only a few tools. Be sure to contact a vehicle professional if you are unsure about any step in the process.

  1. Drain the vehicles gas completely into a gasoline-safe container.
  2. Use a wrench to remove the old petcock from the gas tank and the fuel lines. Loosen it first, and then pull straight down to remove.
  3. Attach the new petcock part to its housing, making sure not to affect the piping or the filters.
  4. Reattach the vacuum lines to the appropriate spots on the petcock. This is also a good time to see if any filters need to be replaced.
