Upgrading with Computer Network Cards
A network card is a piece of hardware that fits into an expansion slot in a computer's motherboard. Most computers come with these cards already built into the system, however, for those that want to upgrade or expand their computer's capabilities or make it function wirelessly, you can find cards separately. Dell manufacturer's several types of wireless cards to fit most laptops.
How Does a Card Work?
A card is the piece of hardware that provides the interface between the computer and network. Whether you are wired or wireless, the card still provides a connection through Ethernet networks or Wi-Fi. There are also network adapters that connect through a USB port.
What Type of Dell Wireless Network Cards Are There?
- Mini PCI. Utilized with notebooks and laptops, these cards work with one mini PCI slot and a built in wireless antenna. The adapter is inside of the computer.
- PCI. These were for desktop computers to make them Wi-Fi capable.
- PCI Express x1. This card is an upgrade from the regular PCI card. It works at about 250 Mbps on a Wi-Fi connection.
- PCI-X. This is an expansion card that allow a traditional PCI card to work at an increased capacity with a higher bandwidth alongside servers and workstations allowing for greater Wi-Fi connectivity.
How Do I Choose the Right Dell Wireless Card?
- Compatibility. When choosing a wireless network card, it is important to make sure that it works with your computer and operating system. Most cards plug into mini PCIe slots. Some cards are USB or PCI and you need to ensure your computer has the proper connection.
- Network Type. Once you know the type of card you want, you need to make sure it can work with your network. Wireless cards can break down into different variants. They are represented by 802.11, followed by a letter. The different versions of these include b, g, n, and a. Other than a, all the other versions are cross compatible and can work together.
- Bluetooth Capability. While most computers come with Bluetooth built into the system, some may not have it. Bluetooth is a good idea to incorporate into your laptop or computer for wireless peripherals or connecting other devices. There are also many different versions of Bluetooth just like Wi-Fi. It is also backwards compatible which means all versions can interconnect with each other.
- Network Speed. All cards have a speed rating which determines the performance of the physical unit. Such speeds include 11Mbps, 54Mbps, and 100Mbps. Just because you have a fast wireless network, does not mean your internet speed will increase. There are other factors that come into play such as bandwidth and the speed you are paying for through your provider.
