Danbury Mint

Launched in Westport, CT, in 1969, Danbury Mint is renowned for its collectibles and commemorative items. Of note are their 1:24 die-cast scale models of classic cars, which ran from the 1980s until the division ceased production in 2014. Models in the various classic vehicles series feature working components and have accessories available.

The very first series from Danbury Mint was classic sports cars that included the Packard V-12 LeBaron Speedster and the Duesenberg SSJ. The company has since produced single classics, series, and limited editions like the replica of James Bond's car from Goldfinger and Thunderball, the '64 Aston Martin DB5. This model, which was discontinued in December 2001, features:

• Working antennae and sun visors.
• Slide-out tire slasher.
• Ejection passenger seat.
• Spring-operated rear bullet shield and taillights that open.
• Radar and mobile phone.

Danbury has also done SUVs, sedans, classic motorcycles, and service vehicles that include an old-fashioned milk truck complete with crates and tiny bottles. Another collection was their 1:43 pewter cars, which are unpainted and without moving parts. That series also features Jaguar models of many years and other historic cars of note. The last car that rolled off of the Danbury assembly line was the three-window 1935 Ford DeLuxe coupe. Other scales created by Danbury are:

Die-casting is a process of making replicas by pouring molten metal into a mold. The most common material is an alloy of zinc and aluminum called zamak. Although this process is usually employed to create replicas of cars, it can also be used to make a number of toys and works of art.

Even if die-cast cars aren't displayed, they can still collect dust or even tarnish if not stored carefully. Cleaning a very dirty vehicle requires a careful assessment because some of the tiny cars have delicate parts. Carefully brush any caked dirt from the surface and use canned, compressed air to blow dust out of crevices. Vacuuming isn't recommended because parts can become dislodged. If the car is seriously dirty, it can be cleaned using a gentle solution of warm soapy water and a soft cloth or cotton swab. For display, try to find an air-tight cabinet and keep them away from direct sunlight and moisture.
