Cobra Crossbows

Crossbows are tools that you can use for shooting sports such as hunting or target shooting competitions. Although they were originally designed and developed for military use, they are no longer used as military weapons.

Does U.S. law require a license to own a crossbow?

These tools are legal for target shooting and other non-hunting uses throughout the United States; however, U.S. federal law does not regulate usage for hunting, so legality for hunting purposes varies by individual state. Always be sure to check with your state's Department of Natural Resources to check current laws and regulations prior to use as a tool for hunting, as laws and regulations are subject to change. In addition, as these are considered weapons, you should only carry and transport them as needed for legitimate purposes such as hunting or target practice.

What type of arrow should you use with Cobra Crossbows?

Most Cobra bows are sold with aluminum bolts included in the packaging. If you want to purchase additional arrows, you can buy the same type of bolts that were included with the bow. Otherwise, it is best practice to refer to your product literature to determine the correct arrow type for your specific model. The three main considerations for arrow selection are as follows:

  • The total weight of the complete bolt
  • The length of the bolt
  • The type of nock equipped on the bow
How often should you replace the string on your bow?

Generally, replacement should be completed on your bow every two to three years under normal usage conditions. Proper maintenance, such as keeping the area where the string makes contact with the track lubricated, and keeping the track clear of debris and gouges, should be completed at least 100 shots before replacement becomes necessary. Although, several hundred shots may be possible. Under heavier usage, replacement should be done more frequently. Failing to do so will result in increase stretch over time and thereby a reduction in draw weight and shot power. Some common signs that it may be time to replace your string include:

  • Signs of wear (like fraying)
  • Signs of stretching
  • Reduction in speed of shot arrows
What are the best safety practices for crossbows?
  • Always treat them like a loaded firearm whether loaded or not
  • Always keep them pointed in a safe direction (away from yourself and other people) whether loaded not
  • Keep your fingers below the rail at all times when the bow is cocked
  • Make sure the bolt is firmly seated prior to shooting
  • Keep the safety on until you're ready to shoot
  • Never shoot a shorter bolt than the manufacturer recommends
