Chevrolet Airbags

Airbags come standard on nearly all modern cars and trucks due to their ability to potentially prevent injury during a crash. If yours has become damaged in any way or has been already released, you can look for a replacement. Once it has been installed, you can have peace of mind while driving your Chevy GM vehicle.

How do airbags work?

The safety system uses a sensor that tells the bag when to inflate. Each sensor is set to trigger when an accident occurs. Many bags are designed to deploy when a force equivalent to hitting a solid barrier at 8 to 14 mph or higher is felt. The process explained below:

  • When it receives the signal, the igniter starts a chemical reaction to create gas.
  • This gas then inflates the bag. This only takes less than a tenth of a second.
  • Immediately after deploying, the bag will start to deflate because air will be passed through the holes that have been placed in it. This is necessary so that passengers can exit the vehicle.
Where are airbags located in a Chevrolet vehicle?

Depending on the year, make, and model of your car, SUV, or truck, you likely have multiple airbags located throughout the interior. These safety devices could be in the following places:

  • In the steering wheel
  • In the passenger dashboard
  • On the side of the vehicle seat
  • On the side curtain
  • Under the dash
  • In the roof behind the rear passenger seats
  • In the rear center console
How do you replace a drivers side airbag?

Since these parts cannot be reused in your Chevy, it is necessary to replace them after a crash. You can use your vehicles manual as a reference as to the exact location of certain components, since every make and model may be slightly different.

  • 1. Turn off the car battery by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal. Wait approximately one hour to allow all of the systems to completely discharge.
  • 2. Deactivate the airbag fuses. Use your manual to find their exact position.
  • 3. Unscrew the screws that hold the steering column together. Remove the panel to expose the old airbag.
  • 4. Unplug the old unit from the wires that connect to it. Attach those wires to your new airbag.
  • 5. Insert the new airbag in the position where you found the old one. Put the column back in place.
What are airbags made out of?

The bags themselves are made out of a thin nylon fabric that is lightweight and durable. That fabric is folded into its compartment. The gas used to fill the bags could be one of the following:

  • Nitrogen gas
  • Compressed nitrogen
  • Compressed argon
  • Propellants that may include nitroguanidine, ammonium nitrate, or another nitrogen-rich fuel
