Carburetors for GMC

Carburetors are an essential part of a vehicles internal combustion engine. It mixes fuel and air to a proper ratio so that all the fuel burns during combustion. This part of a cars internal system is important because it prevents your GMC engine from flooding.

How does a carburetor work?

A carburetor is a distribution system for the fuel that goes to your engine. It works in a relatively simple manner:

  • When you push the accelerator pedal down, a throttle valve opens up to let air into the carburetor. This part opens all the way when you push the gas pedal all the way down.
  • When the valve is fully open, air moves more quickly.
  • The quicker flow of air creates a bigger gap in the carburetor tube.
  • More fuel is sent to the engine, increasing its power.
  • When the car is idling, an amount of air and fuel is sent into the engine by an idling jet.
What do you consider when buying a carburetor?
  • Decide which type of carb you want. There are three types: street legal, high-performance, and race-only. Street legal is the standard for most people.
  • Then, you need to decide the cubic feet per minute that you want for your engine. Take the size of your engine (cubic inches or C.I.D) and multiply it by the maximum rate per minute divided by 3,456.
  • You will need to decide if a vacuum secondary carb or a mechanical one works best. If your car has automatic transmission, you will need a vacuum secondary.
  • Decide the type of choke you need. The choke enriches the air-fuel mixture by restricting air flow to the engine. There are manual and electric chokes.
  • Ensure that the carb you get is compatible with your car.
How do you install a new carburetor?

Once you have made your purchase, this is how you replace the old part with the new one.

  • Label the rubber vacuum hoses and disconnect them from the carb.
  • Use fuel line crimper tools to pinch the fuel lines. Disconnect the fuel lines.
  • Disengage the throttle linkage.
  • Loosen the mounting bolts from the intake manifold studs.
  • Remove the old carb.
  • Compare the new carb to the old one to ensure that it is correct.
  • Replace the gasket between the intake manifold and the carburetor with a new gaaket.
  • Place the new carb onto the gasket.
  • Install and securely tighten the mounting bolts.
  • Reconnect all the lines as well as the throttle linkage.
