Blue Sea Boat Electrical and Lighting Parts: Keeping Your Marine Vessel Reliable in the Field

Modern boats are worlds more complicated than they were a few decades ago. From marine electrical automation systems to circuit failsafe systems and circuit redundancy measures, a lot goes into making your modern boat safe and reliable at sea. Add newer components to an older system to ensure reliable power for heading home.

What Essential Electrical Parts Must I Have?

  • Battery Switch: While a single-battery marine system is workable, a dual battery system is always ideal to have an efficient and reliable power source. A battery switch helps with maintaining optimum charge levels on both engine and house batteries. The Blue Sea dual circuit battery switch isolates the engine and house batteries even when the switch is turned on. This means that the engine battery only powers the engine and the house battery powers only the house loads.
  • Circuit Protection: Your Blue Sea marine electrical system needs a fuse block or panel with varying fuse terminals. An example is the split bus fuse block or panel, which has two blocks. One enables you to dedicate fuses to devices, which are supposed to be permanently on, while another block on the panel is dedicated for fuses switched on and off when you turn on the marine vessels engine. This fuse panel block accepts typical tin-plated blade fuses on its terminals and has a configuration of negative buses for proper connections.
  • Automatic charge relay: A marine electrical system circuit must ensure all the batteries in the circuit are charged accordingly. A DC voltage controlled relay does this well by closing when the DC voltage rises to combine both battery banks together when the alternator is on. But when the engine is shut off and the DC voltage drops, it begins isolating the batteries to let them power their specific circuits.

What Other Devices Are Ideal?

  • Automatic AC disconnect: These devices have terminals that automatically eject when the engine starts to prevent damage to the circuit when the voltage inevitably spikes.
  • Battery management: Smart battery system chargers are ideal for maintaining multiple batteries of different sizes. You can customize the float and absorb voltages to match the manufacturer-recommended voltages of your particular batteries.
  • Cables and Crimpers: Properly wiring the fuse block requires the appropriate cables and crimpers to make a solid electrical connection between the circuit, the fuse, and the fuse block. Without a good set of cables, connectors, and crimpers, the fuses in the fuse block will not function properly as a result of loose connections. Negative terminals also require tight connections in order to properly ground the circuits. Always screw in the negative leads of any circuit to prevent shorts and blowing your blade fuses.
